Web design · Redesign & migration

Website Redesign And Migration Without Losing Traffic

A new website should bring more customers, not wipe out years of rankings overnight. We redesign and move your site with a tested migration plan, so you keep what works and gain what was missing.

Chapter 01 · Signs you need a redesign

Eight Signs Your Website Is Holding You Back

A redesign is a big decision. If several of these sound familiar, your website is likely costing you enquiries every month.

It is awkward to use on a phone
Pages are slow, even after tweaks
Simple updates need a developer
Visitors rarely enquire or buy
It no longer looks like your brand
The platform or theme is outdated
Services have changed, the site has not
Traffic has been flat for a year
Chapter 02 · Choosing the right scope

Refresh, Redesign Or Rebuild?

Not every website needs to start from zero. We recommend the smallest change that fixes the real problem.

Lightest touch

Refresh

Choose it when

The structure works, but the look feels dated or inconsistent.

What changes

Same platform, URLs and content. New styling and key templates.

Typical timeline

3 to 6 weeks

Most common

Redesign

Choose it when

The site no longer converts, and the content or structure needs rethinking.

What changes

Same platform. New design, page structure and much of the content.

Typical timeline

8 to 14 weeks

Biggest change

Rebuild & migrate

Choose it when

The platform is outdated, slow or limiting how you grow.

What changes

New platform, new design and a full URL migration.

Typical timeline

12 to 20 weeks

Chapter 03 · What can go wrong

Why Redesigns Often Lose Traffic

Most traffic losses after a redesign come from the same handful of mistakes. None of them are visible on launch day, which is why they are so expensive.

URLs changed with no redirects
Pages that ranked were removed or merged carelessly
Titles, headings and schema were not carried over
Internal links still point to old pages
The staging site was indexed, or the new site blocked
Analytics and conversion tracking stopped working

Chapter 04 · Content audit

Every Page Gets A Decision, Backed By Data

Before anything is designed, we review every page on your current site using traffic, rankings, links and conversions. Each one falls into one of four groups.

Keep

Ranks well and converts

Carried over with its URL, content and metadata intact.

Improve

Has potential, underperforms

Rewritten or expanded, keeping the URL and what already ranks.

Merge

Overlaps with other pages

Combined into one stronger page, with redirects from the others.

Remove

No traffic, links or purpose

Retired with a redirect to the closest relevant page, or a 410.

Chapter 05 · Redirect mapping

A Redirect Map For Every URL You Have

Each old address is pointed to its closest new match with a permanent 301 redirect. Here is what part of a typical map looks like.

One hop only

Old URLs go straight to the final page, never through a chain of redirects.

Closest match

Each page redirects to the most relevant new page, not to the homepage.

Links updated too

Menus, internal links and sitemaps point to new URLs directly.

Chapter 06 · Types of migration

Every Kind Of Move Has Its Own Risks

Migrations come in different shapes. Each one needs a slightly different plan, and combining several at once raises the risk.

High risk

Platform change

Moving from Wix, Squarespace or an old CMS to WordPress, Shopify or a custom build.

High risk

Domain change

New brand name or domain. Search Console’s change of address tool is used alongside redirects.

Medium risk

Structure change

New URL patterns, categories or folders on the same domain.

Low risk

HTTP to HTTPS

Usually smooth when every page and resource is redirected and updated.

High risk

Merging websites

Combining several sites or brands into one, with careful content decisions.

Low risk

Design-only change

New look, same URLs and content. The safest kind of redesign.

Chapter 07 · Launch and the 90 days after

Launch Day Is The Start, Not The Finish

Search engines take weeks to process a migration. We stay close for three months, so small problems are fixed before they turn into lost revenue.

Launch day
Redirects live and spot-checked
Staging blocks removed, robots.txt checked
New sitemaps submitted
Analytics and conversions tested
Weeks 1 to 4
Daily crawl for errors and broken links
Search Console coverage watched
Top pages’ rankings tracked
Quick fixes for anything missed
Months 2 to 3
Traffic and conversions vs baseline
Remaining old URLs cleaned up
Content improvements on key pages
Final migration report

Questions, answered

Website Redesign & Migration Questions, Answered

Straight answers to what business owners ask us most.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I redesign my website?

Not if the migration is planned properly. Short-term fluctuations are normal for a few weeks, but with redirects, carried-over content and monitoring, most sites recover quickly and often improve.

How long does a website redesign take?

A refresh takes about 3 to 6 weeks, a full redesign 8 to 14 weeks, and a rebuild with platform migration 12 to 20 weeks, depending on size and content.

Can we keep our current URLs?

Where possible, yes. Keeping URLs is the safest option. When structure must change, every old URL is redirected to its closest new match.

What happens to our blog posts and old content?

Each page is reviewed. Valuable content is kept or improved, overlapping pages are merged and outdated pages are retired with redirects.

Should we change platform during the redesign?

Only if your current platform is genuinely limiting you. Changing platform adds risk and time, so we recommend it when the benefits are clear.

Can you migrate us from Wix or Squarespace?

Yes. We regularly move sites from Wix, Squarespace and older CMSs to WordPress or Shopify, with full redirect mapping.

What if our redesign already launched and traffic dropped?

We can help recover it. We compare the old and new sites, find missing redirects and lost content, and fix them in order of impact.
